Art Carts

An “Art Cart” represents a fusion of diverse artistic media into a challenge against the conventional idea of a video game.

Phil Hunt and Robert Doman were the progenitors of the term “#ArtCart”, coining the term in their online conversations concerning GB Studio.

Hunt defined the term as follows:

“It is a word derived from describing the physical media for the Game Boy ‘cartridge’ with a prefix ‘art’ to indicate ‘this is not a game’. We wanted a term that described those projects made by artists, poets, and musicians that were other than a game. An art cartridge, therefore, becomes an ArtCart.”

In the following section, you will find a curated selection of “Art Carts” and their corresponding creator(s).
